Hi my father Adam Thomson Yule, was born in Tarbrax 1914, but moved back to Carluke where the Yule family lived before moving to Tarbrax. His father was John Yule a coal miner and his mother Elizabeth Thompson, John's parents were Thomas Yule and Catherine Morrison. I have researched the family history but would welcome any info. I have traced the Yules to Douglas in the 1700's.
Kind regards Victoria Yule Walker.

Would like to hear from anyone who has any stories about Dr. Daniel Rankin.
Also very interested in Milton-Lockhart House and Mauldslie Castle. I know Lockhart it was dismantled and shipped to Japan where it was renamed Lockheart Castle. What a wonderful stretch of the imagination THAT was.
I left Ashgill as a boy of 11 in 1963. My father was the local physician. We lived in a house named Lilybank (still there) on Ashgillhead road. A new (web) friend of mine was 17 at the time and happened to leave Ashgill at the same time. He has stories about the old house as it was a derelict in the late 1950's.
My parents would often drive us past the gate to the bridge for Mauldslie on the way to the Popinjay Hotel, but we never took much notice.
Thanks!
Jimmy

A job well done on your web site. Colourful, easy to navigate and informative. I am seeking information on a distant relative by the name of John Woodburn. John's parents were George Woodburn and Elizabeth Sinclair. They were married in Glassford on the 26th of July 1861. Together they had 9 children. John was born in Glassford in 1878. Whether he married or not I do not know. He was living in Brown Street, Larkhall in 1928 when his cousin Archibald Sinclair visited. John died on the 27th of January 1962 in Carluke at the age of 84. Where he is buried again I do not know but his name is inscribed on the family headstone in the Glassford kirkyard along with other family members. I am very interested in contacting any of his decendents and learning more about the Woodburn/Sinclair story. Betsy Sinclair

Mary Lindsay born 1816, Carluke. I am having a great deal of difficulty in locating the birth records of my gggg grandmother Mary Lindsay who was supposedly born on the 18th of August 1816 at Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I am after her birth record because I cannot locate her parents! 1) With her in the 1851 Census - was a James Lindsay born abt 1825 - described as a lodger. He is in the 1841 census with his ? parents John Lindsay aged 52 and Amelia Lindsay aged 52 and other siblings Janet 24, James 15, Alexander 14 and William aged 12. This could be her parents but I am not sure. Are there any birth records for Mary Lindsay in Carluke? And if so does it have her parents' names? She was supposedly a silk weaver.I cannot locate her in the 1841 Census. I have her in the 1851 Census with her husband and 1st child. 2) She married Andrew Craigie on the 2nd of October 1849 at St Pauls Church, Glasgow. They had 3 children before they emigrated to Australia. Jane Craigie b 1850 Bothwell St barony; Margaret Craigie b 16 Feb 1852 Green Hill St barony and John Craigie 4 May 1854 Green Hill St barony. As I am in Australia I am finding it very difficult to find her and have been on Ancestry but can't locate her.

Hi, I'm looking for family that have been lost. In the 1940's/50's a John Brown had two children a girl called Mary and a boy Robert Brown. His wife died either in child birth or when Robert was young. Robert moved to England when he was 17 years old in 1969 (ish) and his sister moved to Spain. John brown worked in the steel works as a laborer I believe. The birth of Robert Brown was registered at Shotts I think but can't be sure and we don't have the exact date of birth except that it was around 1951. Please help we are desperate for this info. Thanks.

Stumbled upon your site whilst trying to locate a grave number at Wilton Cemetery. Brought back lovely memories of Carluke. I was born there in 1944, (Moorside St) then moved to Glenburn Terrace and attended Carluke Higher Grade at the top of Chappel Street until I joined the RAF in 1960.I spent my young life wandering all around the places mentioned, Hallcraig, Braidwood, Castlehill, 'the golfcourse' as it was in those days, the Brickworks, the Tileworks, the Jam factory. No doubt all gone now. I was barely 16 when I left and returned on occasions but unfortuneately not for a long time now. I dare say the place has changed dramatically since my day but I still think fondly of my time there.

I have just spent hours perusing your site, brought back many, many wonderful memories for me. I was born and raised in Carluke, left in 1974 for U.S.A., lived in New Jersey for many years and have now moved to Florida. Last visited home in 2005 and hope to visit Carluke in spring of 2011. Spend many hours a week talking to my two sisters who still live in Carluke. Kudos to those who have done (and still do) such a wonderful job.

I have been told that my aunt, Mabel Saunders, married a man named "Grey" or "Gray". He was said to be an officer in a "Scottish Regiment".I understand that the marriage ended in either divorce or permanent separation. The time frame was during "the war" - don't know if the reference was WW1 or WW2.Any hints would be gratefully received.Marge

My great-great-great-grandfather James Kerr (1797-1864) moved from Leadhills to Carluke about 1838 to work at Shotts Mine/Ironworks. By 1861 he was the manager. The family lived at Castlehill Cottage and Castlehill House. I would love to know if these buildings still exist.

My great grandmother's family came from Carluke. She was Margaret Davidson, born 187?, daughter of Archibald Davidson and wife Sarah (nee Long or Lang) in 'Worleyburn'??? She emigrated to the USA and married John Devine, originally from Lonhorsley in Northumberland, but with Irish parents. They married in Ohio 1894/1895, and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was a miner. In the USA they had 3 daughters, my grandmother Sarah, Mary and Margaret. They were on the 1900 USA census. They returned to Glasgow in January 1901 aboard the SS Furnessia, and were on the and appear on the Scottish census in Carluke later that year. They eventually moved to Northumberland and were there for the 1911 census. Are there any relatives still in Carluke? I'd love to hear from you.

DAVID JACKSON SCOTS GUARDS ITALY 1944/45 - Further to my previous posting, I have now been given further information as follows. It has also been confirmed that David Jackson was serving in the Scots Guards and not the RASC as previously stated. On behalf of a friend I am seeking information on David Jackson born in 1920, son of Alexander Jackson and Jeanie Purdie that lived in 9 Highmill Road, Carluke; Alexander Jackson died in 1968, Jeanie Purdie died in 1950.David Jackson was a serving soldier in the SCOTS GUARDS in 1944/45 near the towns of Bologna, ITALY (precisely: Castiglione dei Pepoli town). His last known address was 16 New Place, Tranton Rd, Bermondsey, London. He had some brothers: William Jackson Private in R.E.M.E. and that lived in 82 Miller Street, Carluke; Robert Jackson also in Scots Guards; John Jackson and another brother unknown first name. The photo of William, Robert and David Jackson appeared in the Carluke Gazette of 19 May 1944 with motor bikes in Italy. We think he came from the area and the Bermondsey address was only a temporary one. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Please can anyone help. Are there any McCallums living in Carluke? My Great Grandfather was Robert or Duncan born around 1850. He came to live in England where he met my Great Grandmother Catherine Manning and they had eleven children between them. There is no trace of a birth, marriage or death certificate for Robert/Duncan but the surname on the children's certificates seems to vary a lot (McCullum, McCallund, Mac etc). Many thanksThelma (nee McCallum)

My Grandfather William Penman grew up in Carluke around 1910 to 1930's when he left to settle in Letchworth, England with his wife Eileen. They had three daughters Pat, Pauline and Peggy. He had, I believe, about 13 brothers and sisters and I hope there are some of them still in the area. He was the oldest child in the family. it would be nice to see if I have any relatives in the area. William is survived by two of his daughters Pat, my mother and my Aunt Pauline, both are now in their 70's.

My dad, Andrew Hamilton, sent me the link for this website. Although I was born in West Yorkshire in 1969, I spent many a happy summer on Brown Street in Carluke with my grandparents (Jessie and Alec Hamilton). It was great to look at the old pictures and although in the 1970's it had changed dramatically, it was good to see it again. I spotted the clothes shop where my Great Auntie Mary used to work. I also particularly remember a great little toy shop that my Gran used to take us to in the High Street - Happy days!

Just been having a look at the Carluke site.I left Carluke in 1961,have lived in England since but I am still very interested in the old place. It has changed dramatically since then and is no longer the little market town it was with the old High Street and shops.A couple of weeks ago I did a search on Carluke and ended up buying a few items from Amazon. One was a pictorial history of the town which I have found very interesting. As I remember, there was still one copy (used) available for sale.If I can help with any info in your searches, I would be pleased to. I was born in 1942 in Newbarns Street. My father was Alec (Sany) and my mother Jessie Robb Russell. The Russells in the 1930's used to have the coal and bus business at the garage in Hozier Street. It was destroyed by fire and grandad was not insured (as many weren't then) and the business was lost. My grandad, Andrew Hamilton, was a joiner and gunsmith. Later after he died, Gran married Mr Safely who had the jewellers in the High Street next to the cycle shop.. When they closed down my Uncle, Willie Russell, bought them both and turned them into a large fruit and veg shop in the 1950's. Dad died in 1999 and mum in 2003. Note my email address. There was an old boy in our street who always referred to Carluke as ekulrac. When I was looking for an acceptable email address all sorts of Hamilton combinations were suggested. I remembered the old boys name for Carluke and, as expected, it had not been used so I am now known as ekulrac to all my friends and family.
