I have just spent hours perusing your site, brought back many, many wonderful memories for me. I was born and raised in Carluke, left in 1974 for U.S.A., lived in New Jersey for many years and have now moved to Florida. Last visited home in 2005 and hope to visit Carluke in spring of 2011. Spend many hours a week talking to my two sisters who still live in Carluke. Kudos to those who have done (and still do) such a wonderful job.

I have been told that my aunt, Mabel Saunders, married a man named "Grey" or "Gray". He was said to be an officer in a "Scottish Regiment".

I understand that the marriage ended in either divorce or permanent separation. The time frame was during "the war" - don't know if the reference was WW1 or WW2.

Any hints would be gratefully received.

My great grandmother's family came from Carluke. She was Margaret Davidson, born 187?, daughter of Archibald Davidson and wife Sarah (nee Long or Lang) in 'Worleyburn'??? She emigrated to the USA and married John Devine, originally from Lonhorsley in Northumberland, but with Irish parents.

They married in Ohio 1894/1895, and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was a miner. In the USA they had 3 daughters, my grandmother Sarah, Mary and Margaret. They were on the 1900 USA census. They returned to Glasgow in January 1901 aboard the SS Furnessia, and were on the and appear on the Scottish census in Carluke later that year. They eventually moved to Northumberland and were there for the 1911 census.

Are there any relatives still in Carluke? I'd love to hear from you.

DAVID JACKSON SCOTS GUARDS ITALY 1944/45

Further to my previous posting, I have now been given further information as follows. It has also been confirmed that David Jackson was serving in the Scots Guards and not the RASC as previously stated.

On behalf of a friend I am seeking information on David Jackson born in 1920, son of Alexander Jackson and Jeanie Purdie that lived in 9 Highmill Road, Carluke; Alexander Jackson died in 1968, Jeanie Purdie died in 1950.

David Jackson  was a serving soldier in the SCOTS GUARDS in 1944/45 near the towns of Bologna, ITALY ( precisely: Castiglione dei Pepoli town). His last known address was 16 New Place, Tranton Rd, Bermondsey, London. He had some brothers: William Jackson Private in R.E.M.E. and that lived in 82 Miller Street, Carluke; Robert Jackson also in Scots Guards; John Jackson and another brother unknown first name.

The photo of William, Robert and David Jackson appeared in the Carluke Gazette of 19 May 1944 with motor bikes in Italy. We think he came from the area and the Bermondsey address was only a temporary one.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

My Great Grandfather was Robert or Duncan born around 1850. He came to live in England where he met my Great Grandmother Catherine Manning and they had eleven children between them. There is no trace of a birth, marriage or death certificate for Robert/Duncan but the surname on the children's certificates seems to vary a lot (McCullum, McCallund, Mac etc).

Many thanks

My Grandfather William Penman grew up in Carluke around 1910 to 1930's when he left to settle in Letchworth, England with his wife Eileen. They had three daughters Pat, Pauline and Peggy. He had, I believe, about 13 brothers and sisters and I hope there are some of them still in the area. He was the oldest child in the family. it would be nice to see if I have any relatives in the area. William is survived by two of his daughters Pat, my mother and my Aunt Pauline, both are now in their 70's.

My dad, Andrew Hamilton, sent me the link for this website.  Although I was born in West Yorkshire in 1969, I spent many a happy summer on Brown Street in Carluke with my grandparents (Jessie and Alec Hamilton).  It was great to look at the old pictures and although in the 1970's it had changed dramatically, it was good to see it again.

I spotted the clothes shop where my Great Auntie Mary used to work. I also particularly remember a great little toy shop that my Gran used to take us to in the High Street - Happy days!

Just been having a look at the Carluke site.

I left Carluke in 1961,have lived in England since but I am still very interested in the old place.

It has changed dramatically since then and is no longer the little market town it was with the old High Street and shops.

A couple of weeks ago I did a search on Carluke and ended up buying a few items from Amazon. One was a pictorial history of the town which I have found very interesting. As I remember, there was still one copy (used) available for sale.

If I can help with any info in your searches, I would be pleased to. I was born in 1942 in Newbarns Street. My father was Alec (Sany) and my mother Jessie Robb Russell. The Russells in the 1930\'s used to have the coal and bus business at the garage in Hozier Street. It was destroyed by fire and Grand Dad was not insured (as many weren't then) and the business was lost. My Grand Dad, Andrew Hamilton, was a joiner and gunsmith. Later after he died, Gran married Mr Safely who had the jewellers in the High Street next to the cycle shop.. When they closed down my Uncle, Willie Russell, bought them both and turned them into a large fruit and veg shop in the 1950\'s. Dad died in 1999 and Mum in 2003.

Note my email address. There was an old boy in our street who always referred to Carluke as ekulrac. When I was looking for an acceptable email address all sorts of Hamilton combinations were suggested. I remembered the old boys name for Carluke and, as expected, it had not been used so I am now known as ekulrac to all my friends and family.

Looking to contact Mary Williamson or descendants. We have been reseaching the Barr family in Scotland and descendants in Australia and over many years have assembled extensive data pertaining same within our Legacy family tree program.

Through an Australian researcher, Ruth Pfitzner (now deceased) we have been provided with a letter dated 4 March 1990 from Cynthia (surname unknown) at Moss Bay Hotel in Workington and who refers to information provided by a Mary Williamson. Advice from the Workington Library indicates the Moss Bay Hotel has been demolished and to date no record of Cynthia has been established, though investigations are continuing. The information contained within the letter from Cynthia and as advised by Mary Williamson has been invaluable to our research, though the letter also indicates Mary Williamson was sourcing further detail, which has not come to light to date.

Whilst we understand this request may be a long shot, we are hopeful that a reader may be able to provide information re the status of Mary Williamson and/or contact information of her family and who may be able to provide further detail re our family research. Any assistance forthcoming relative to the above would be much appreciated.

I intend visiting Carluke in Sept/October 2009.  My grandmother Jane Orr was born in Carluke in 1873. She married John Craig a miner and they appear to have moved a number of times to small towns close by to Carluke, namely Wishaw, Overtown, Ashgill, Waterloo to name a few before immigrating to Australia and then moving on to New Zealand. My grandmother's parents were Alexander Orr and Betsy Gilfillan who were married in Carluke in 1871. They had 4 children. Betsy died in 1878 and Alexander remarried Ann Weir in Carluke 1883 and from this union there were 6 children that I know of.  Betsy's parents also lived in Carluke, James Gilfillan and Elizabeth Currie married in 1841. I'm really looking forward to our visit and trying to find any relations that may still be residing in Carluke. Any formation in regards to the above family names would be much appreciated.

My Great Grand Aunt Catherine McLean married a Thomas Brown in Carluke on 11/06/1843.

I have some birth certificates between 1843 and 1881 where the place of birth is given as Orchard, Carluke and one death certificate that looks like Tice of Orchard Carluke.

Is/was Orchard a part of Carluke or maybe the name of a house in Carluke?

Thanks

Posted here a while ago and mentioned that my GG Grandfather Richard Gibb lived in Carluke, he was brickworks manager, he also lived in Hallcraig House for a time and I have posted on Lanarkshire Family History site about this too - I did find a bit about the history of the house some time ago but can't find it now! Seems a pity that these things get lost in time as I guess it would have been quite a prominent estate at one time..nice website :) thank you.

This is a very good site, have made lots of contacts given out loads of info and have gleaned quite a lot of information concerning my ancestors. They came from the Hallcraig and Castlehill area of Carluke. My relations are Rafferty, Finnigan, and way back to my great great granddad who married a Mary Prior from Yieldshields.  I am particularly interested in a Peter Graham who stayed at 77 Cairneymount Rd in the late 40's and who was married to Mary Finnigan. If anyone has any details of any of these families I would love to hear from you as I have been building the family tree for some time now.

Hi Everyone,

I was born in Carluke in 1945 and most of my reli's lived and died there. My parents moved to Fife in my early years.

I have just got hold of my Great Grandfather's death cert and it says he died in "Hallcraig", I've had a wee search around and I now know there is a golf course there and has been for many years, but he was 80 when he died in 1931, maybe he WAS playing golf. I was wondering if there were houses nearby or maybe a wee hospital where he would have been cared for.

I would much appreciate if anyone can shed a wee bit on light on things for me.

Also does anyone know of Brichfield or Birchfield in Denniston? Was it a coal mine, a hospital, a works of some kind? Would love to find out.

Thanking you for reading my post.

Bye for now, Ann

I am an Artist and Writer, hoping to reunite with ancestral relations and learn from historical information. My Great Grandfather was born in Lanarkshire, Carluke. His name was Thomas Lewis. He was an infant when his family came over to Kansas by way of Chicago, U.S.A. in approx. Jan. 1850 - His Father's name was William Lewis - born Feb.17,1822 - William had lived previously in Edinburgh. He farmed in strawberry crops and also painted homes.

Tom's mother was maiden-named Agnes Sloan (born - Aug. 8th, 1830), her Mother was named Ellen. The Father's name, David Johnston Sloan - who may have come from or lived in Ayrshire? William and Agnes were probably married in Ayrshire in 1848.

When I visited briefly in Carluke, approx. 1989, I was impressed by the kindness of the Carluke folks I met and the real charm of Carluke and countryside - all a round there.

Thomas named his first child William, who was my mother's Dad. He had a truck farm growing strawberries in Iowa, Kansas, and was Chairman of the Farmer's Co-op and President of his painters Union. He lived his retirement years in Long Beach, California, Grandpa Willam Lewis was a very gentle and loving person!

Sometime in the near future, I would like to visit for a day, any Carluke Lewis folks, along with my wife, and perhaps do some art and writings in the research we might be able to share....

Please write us, using the email address to the left or send us ground mail, if you know anything about the folks I have named here. Or if you have any Lewis ancestry...

Bless you!

I am researching my Family Tree. My grandmother was Helen Farren (sometimes spelt Farran). She was one of eight children born to John Farren and his wife, Helen nee Richmond.

Other surnames which appear in my tree are Bruce, McIntyre, Lammie and McConnell.

Some of the events (ie marriages and deaths) took place in Carluke. For example, Helen Richmond Farren, who married James McIntyre in 1926, died in The Law Hospital Carluke in 1973.

Helen (Ellen) Richmond Bruce, married Thomas Saddler McConnell in 1926 - address Meadow Cottage, Old Lanark Road, Carluke. Her sister, Jane Black Bruce married James Lammie in 1924, same address.

Their mother, Isabella Bruce (nee Farren, a sister of my grandmother) died in 1960 in The County Hospital Carluke. Her son, Henry Bruce, registered the death. He lived in Carluke but unfortunately I cannot read the address on the death certificate.

Does anybody recognise any of these names? If so, I would love to hear from you.

What a wonderful way of contacting people. Since I wrote on 19-1-2008 I have had contact with a gentleman in Canada who is researching the Cameron Highlanders including my wife's uncle William Train killed in action in France 1917.

My wife's family have also a Holy Bible of Marion Alpins dated 1846. The following is written in the Bible "Jean Train my daughter who died 7th day of July 10 mins before 1 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Aged 5 years Carluke 1844.", also "Martha Train my daughter died April 29, 1861 at 1 o'clock past meridian aged 10 years". This Bible would have come to Australia with Mrs Train (my wife's grandmother) when she and her sons came to Australia. I would be happy to hear from someone who could draw some light on these names.

My family tree research leads me to Carluke. I'm interested in the surname of Miller. My Great Great Grandad was born in 1848 in Carluke. He moved to Manchester in the early 1870's. His name was Robert Miller. He had brothers and sisters by the names of Elizabeth, Ellen, James, William, John, Thomas (I think they stayed in Carluke). His parents were called Robert Miller and Janet Dick. Janet died young and Robert (Snr) married an Elizabeth Scott. They had a son called John Scott Miller born c 1875, Carluke. I think he married a Minnie Walker. The Millers lived at various homes in Chapel St, Cldye St, Carnworth Rd. A few members of this Miller family's occupation was a Tailor and I am led to believe they had their own business. Is anyone familiar with these names? If so, I would love to hear from you, please get in touch.

This geneology proper begins with one James Steel who came to America from Ireland. My research leads me to think that his father's name was James Steel, Sr., and that the senior James was a son of the historical John Steel who married Margaret Weir and lived at Waygateshaw in the parish old Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland, about the year 1700.

I have been told that my grandmother, Janet Watson Clarkson Beck was raised in Carluke, during the early 1900's. Is there any way to find out where her family lived in Carluke? Her father's name was Andrew Hamilton Clarkson and I believe he is buried in Scotland.

Thank you for any assistance that you can provide. Pamela

Am trying to get details of a Miss Jean Kelly my violin teacher circa 1948-49 who lived in Carluke. She played with the Scottish National Orchestra and had nephew called Derek who lived with her. As I recall her house lay second street on the right past the football ground.

I am looking for the details to flesh out a memoir I'm writing.

Grateful to anyone will can help me.

I am the grandaughter of William Angus VC. I wondered if any of you can help me. I am in the process of writing about his life but although I spent a lot of my childhood in Carluke with him, I was not about in the period I need information on. I need to know about Carluke as it was between 1888 and 1914. What the pits were called? How people lived in the town? etc. General information is all I want.

If anybody can help me please contact me. Thankyou.

What can I say about Carluke except I have many happy childhood memories of it. As a small boy my Gran moved from Bonkle to Elderslea Road where she stayed for many years before moving to Whitehill Crescent. I spent every school holiday up there with my parents and sister. (My mum was born and brought up in Morningside before moving down to England with my dad). I absolutely loved Carluke. I still have an aunt and cousins living there now. Happy days indeed.
