My great-grandfather was born in Carluke 14 or 17 June 1856. He was called John Kenedy McCoubrey. I would like to know if I could get his faith or date of birth.

Hi, I am trying to research my family tree, from what I have found my Grandfather was born in Carluke in 1922 (James Lennie Bruce). I am trying to find his father who I have been told played for Carluke Rovers around about 1930 and also won a Scottish Juniors Cap against England 1931/32.

Any information would be appreciated thank you.

Great site. Really enjoyed it. Spent most Sundays when I was young visiting my granny and uncles in Thompson Street. My granny was Margaret Morrison nee Finnigan.

My grandad Stewart died in 1929 when my dad was 8. My dad was John Morrison born 1921 Hallcraig, later moved to Thompson Street.

My dad died in April this year so I am reacquainting myself with his birthplace. Have visited the town twice recently and still have relations living there.

Hello William, still waiting for the hankies!

Hello! I am Dara, from Bangladesh. I would really appreciate if some one would give me a profile of Carluke for back in 1971. What was the size of the population, how many Bangalis lived in Carluke then, and what were their professions. I am doing a research on the role of Bengali community during the liberation war in Bangladesh in 1971. I know someone from Carluke Bengali comunity took part as a member of the then Bangladesh Association, Scotland.

I am an Artist and Writer, hoping to reunite with ancestral relations and learn from historical information. My Great Grandfather was born in Lanarkshire, Carluke. His name was Thomas Lewis. He was an infant when his family came over to Kansas by way of Chicago, U.S.A. in approx. Jan. 1850 - His Father's name was William Lewis - born Feb.17,1822 - William had lived previously in Edinburgh. He farmed in strawberry crops and also painted homes.

Tom's mother was maiden-named Agnes Sloan (born - Aug. 8th, 1830), her Mother was named Ellen. The Father's name, David Johnston Sloan - who may have come from or lived in Ayrshire? William and Agnes were probably married in Ayrshire in 1848.

When I visited briefly in Carluke, approx. 1989, I was impressed by the kindness of the Carluke folks I met and the real charm of Carluke and countryside - all a round there.

Thomas named his first child William, who was my mother's Dad. He had a truck farm growing strawberries in Iowa, Kansas, and was Chairman of the Farmer's Co-op and President of his painters Union. He lived his retirement years in Long Beach, California, Grandpa Willam Lewis was a very gentle and loving person!

Sometime in the near future, I would like to visit for a day, any Carluke Lewis folks, along with my wife, and perhaps do some art and writings in the research we might be able to share....

Please write us, using the email address to the left or send us ground mail, if you know anything about the folks I have named here. Or if you have any Lewis ancestry...

Bless you!

I am researching my Family Tree. My grandmother was Helen Farren (sometimes spelt Farran). She was one of eight children born to John Farren and his wife, Helen nee Richmond.

Other surnames which appear in my tree are Bruce, McIntyre, Lammie and McConnell.

Some of the events (ie marriages and deaths) took place in Carluke. For example, Helen Richmond Farren, who married James McIntyre in 1926, died in The Law Hospital Carluke in 1973.

Helen (Ellen) Richmond Bruce, married Thomas Saddler McConnell in 1926 - address Meadow Cottage, Old Lanark Road, Carluke. Her sister, Jane Black Bruce married James Lammie in 1924, same address.

Their mother, Isabella Bruce (nee Farren, a sister of my grandmother) died in 1960 in The County Hospital Carluke. Her son, Henry Bruce, registered the death. He lived in Carluke but unfortunately I cannot read the address on the death certificate.

Does anybody recognise any of these names? If so, I would love to hear from you.

Janet

What a wonderful way of contacting people. Since I wrote on 19-1-2008 I have had contact with a gentleman in Canada who is researching the Cameron Highlanders including my wife's uncle William Train killed in action in France 1917.

My wife's family have also a Holy Bible of Marion Alpins dated 1846. The following is written in the Bible "Jean Train my daughter who died 7th day of July 10 mins before 1 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Aged 5 years Carluke 1844.", also "Martha Train my daughter died April 29, 1861 at 1 o'clock past meridian aged 10 years". This Bible would have come to Australia with Mrs Train (my wife's grandmother) when she and her sons came to Australia. I would be happy to hear from someone who could draw some light on these names.

Thanks for your wonderful website.

What an absolutely fantastic site. I lived in Carluke until 1983, when I was 17. I left to join the Navy and returned 2 years ago after almost 23 years. This place is more like home than anywhere else I have lived (and I've lived in loads of places - including abroad). One thing that I would love to see more of would be pictures of the 'Old Carluke'. I don't remember the Windsor Cinema in operation but would play in amongst the pillars, pictures of the High Street as it used to be, pictures of the Town Hall and the Drill Hall. I just love this place.

My family tree research leads me to Carluke. I'm interested in the surname of Miller. My Great Great Grandad was born in 1848 in Carluke. He moved to Manchester in the early 1870's. His name was Robert Miller. He had brothers and sisters by the names of Elizabeth, Ellen, James, William, John, Thomas (I think they stayed in Carluke). His parents were called Robert Miller and Janet Dick. Janet died young and Robert (Snr) married an Elizabeth Scott. They had a son called John Scott Miller born c 1875, Carluke. I think he married a Minnie Walker. The Millers lived at various homes in Chapel St, Cldye St, Carnworth Rd. A few members of this Miller family's occupation was a Tailor and I am led to believe they had their own business. Is anyone familiar with these names? If so, I would love to hear from you, please get in touch.

Our branch:
This geneology proper begins with one James Steel who came to America from Ireland. My research leads me to think that his father's name was James Steel, Sr., and that the senior James was a son of the historical John Steel who married Margaret Weir and lived at Waygateshaw in the parish old Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland, about the year 1700.

(My mum was born and brought up in Morningside before moving down to England with my dad). I absolutely loved Carluke. I still have an aunt and cousins living there now. Happy days indeed.

Researching family history of the Moffats from Carluke. My grandparents - Frederick Moffat and Mary Dolan were married (whereby Mary became Mary Moffat) in Feb 1918 at the Parish Church Manse Carluke and were living at Dovecot Lane and Rankin Street respectively. They had 5 children that I know of - Frederick, James, Hugh (my father), Robert and Mary. In 1924 when my father was born they were living at Foundry Cottage and my grandfather Frederick was working at the Foundry (is it still there ??). My grandfather Frederick had a bad accident in 1940 whilst working as a Furnaceman (presumably still at the Foundry) and died from his injuries in Royal Infirmary Glasgow - at this time they were living in Mauldslie Road, Carluke. If anyone has any information about my family, the places/addresses mentioned or anything relevant I would be extremely grateful if they would contact me.

If people within your community are worried about flooding and wonder if there's anything you can do to be better prepared then look no further. Floodline, Scotland's free national flooding information and advice service, can be accessed by phone on 0845 988 1188 or online at www.sepa.org.uk/flooding. It's run by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and our highly trained staff can tell you if you live within a flood warning scheme area, if any flood watches or warnings have been issued for an area, and can also provide practical advice on what to do before, during and after a flood. I would be grateful if you could include our telephone number and/or link to our website from your site. I think this would benefit people within your community to know that this service exists if they may require it.

Hello - I pulled up the website for Carluke. I live in Rochester Hills, Michigan USA. I have an antique grandfather clock and am trying to find out something about it. On the painted face it says "Carluke" and has a painting of Mary Queen of Scot's abdication. It also has "Purdie & Safely" painted on the face. I had never heard of Carluke and was wondering if there are any clock shops which may have had this clock before. I appreciate you taking the time to read my note. Thank you for your assistance. Your town looks beautiful and someday I would love to come to Scotland.
